Aisha Goes to School

Aisha was twelve when her family was freed from bonded labor. She had never been to school. Like many children born into slavery at brick kilns, her days were spent making bricks — not learning to read, write, or imagine a future beyond the kiln.

Education as a pathway

At Exodus51, we believe literacy is key to true freedom. When children are enrolled in school, they gain more than knowledge — they gain the tools to build lives that slavery can never take away.

I never thought I would sit in a classroom. Now I want to be a teacher so other children like me can learn to read.

Aisha was placed in our School program and connected to a local school near her family’s new home. The transition was not easy — she had years of catching up to do — but she showed up every day with a determination that inspired her teachers and her family.

Her story is still being written. But every day in that classroom is a step toward a future her grandparents could never have imagined — a future where freedom is not rare, but real.
